Notice that although the picture reads "Fort Ringgold , Texas", it appears that the government considered the military camp as a seperate entity from Rio Grande City. With the local riot of the late 1880's tensions mounted between the military ,the sheriff's office, and local residents. Over the years, however, some military soldiers married into the families living in the city and normal relation continued till the late 1940's. Most local people welcomed the existance of the camp for it provide a great number of jobs, especially during the Great Depression. Presently some of the buildings pictured are still being utilized by Rio Grande City C.I.S.D. The two building towards the top left and right serve as Ringgold Middle School Band Halls. The building pictured in the center no longer exists. |
