Parade down Main Street

Military parades in the early 1900's down main street were not an uncommon site in this border town, Rio Grande City, especially after the riots of the late 1880's. Military presence was very essential for it brought peace and tranquility to the region. Some local people feel that this was a means of keeping law and order after a great deal of lands transferred from Mexican claims into the hands of the newly arrived .

It was a way of protecting the American interests along the border after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
